Devin Leal was 17 and attending a gathering with friends in San Benito, Texas, on August 27, 2016, when he was struck in the head by a .40-caliber pistol that police say accidentally discharged. Devin was pronounced dead at the scene. A friend identified as 21-year-old Jonathan Gamez turned himself in later that day and was charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony; bond was set at $300,000 and Gamez was taken into custody at the Cameron County jail.
Police Chief Michael Galvan described the event as a tragic and unfortunate accident. The death prompted local attention to the dangers of handling firearms during social gatherings.
Does anyone have information about the gathering or saw events that night?
