William Valdez, a 69-year-old Hispanic man, was fatally shot during a botched robbery at his east-side residence in San Angelo, Texas. The break-in happened around 4:05 a.m. on August 31, 2015, at a home in the 500 block of Sellers Street. Valdez was shot under his left arm and spent about two weeks on life support before dying at Shannon Medical Center on September 15, 2015. His daughter Jody Valdez and other family members were at his bedside in the ICU and Jody later delivered a victim impact statement in court.

Four people were implicated in the incident: Jonathan Jesse Marin, Eric John Martinez, Eliza Victoria Losoya, and Fernando Lavaris Jr. Marin and Martinez pleaded guilty and were sentenced earlier. Lavaris was originally charged with capital murder; on April 4, 2019, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder under a plea agreement, received a life sentence, waived his right to appeal, and was ordered to pay $7,236.80 in restitution. The suspects had been indicted by a grand jury on capital murder by terror threat and other felonies.
