Arend Van Der Hoven, 50, of Sarasota, Florida, disappeared while boating off Marathon on July 8, 2012. Known to friends as Arnie, he left Blackfin Marina at 8:00 a.m. aboard his 21-foot center console and was expected back by 2:00 p.m. When he failed to return, marina staff alerted authorities and the U.S. Coast Guard conducted an air and sea search.
Hours later the boat was found stranded about a mile south of Duck Key with no sign of Van Der Hoven aboard. Despite an extensive search, no trace of him has ever been located and he is presumed lost at sea. At the time he was described as 5 feet 6 inches, 150 to 180 pounds, with graying brown hair and brown eyes; he was last seen wearing a green shirt, dark green cargo pants, and sandals.
The case remains open with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office seeking information that could help provide closure. Does anyone have information about his movements that day or saw that boat near Duck Key?
