Deputy Sheriff Larry Sherwood Kolb, 40, was killed on October 2, 1999, in Kendall County, Texas, while answering a shots fired call at the Shady Rest Mobile Home Park near Boerne. Off duty and heading home after a shift, Kolb responded because he was the closest deputy. After identifying himself, he was shot in the neck and chest by a suspect armed with an AK-47; Kolb was not wearing a bulletproof vest. The suspect, who had been hiding under a trailer, continued firing at arriving officers and was shot and killed by returning gunfire.

Kolb had three years with the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and 22 years total in law enforcement, including service with the Lago Vista Police Department and the Austin Independent School District Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two young sons. Investigators determined the suspect was an illegal alien from Central America who had been arrested three months earlier for an unrelated crime; the motive for the ambush remains unclear.

Did anyone in the area at the time see activity around the Shady Rest Mobile Home Park that night or have information about the suspect’s movements before the shooting?
