Deputy Constable Patrick Stephen Runyon, 32, was shot and killed on February 7, 1981, while responding to a misdemeanor criminal mischief call at 2515 Sundown Lane in Robstown, Texas. As he approached the house, one of two brothers inside shot him in the heart with a small caliber pistol loaded with rat-shot, killing him instantly. He was described as a Caucasian male.

Both brothers were arrested and later tried, but they were acquitted of the charges. The killing left a surviving wife, a child, his parents and eight siblings, and it remains a stark example of an officer killed in the line of duty.
