I was reading about the terrible events surrounding the Vogel family, and something that caught my attention was how George Jefferson Hassell managed to deceive the community for so long. It's chilling to think about how he lived among them for nearly a decade while their tragic fate remained hidden. The neighbors apparently believed his story that Marie and the kids had moved to San Francisco, which seems like such a feasible story, especially during that era when long-distance communication was rare. I'm left wondering about the impact this had on the community once the truth came to light. The realization that someone they might have shared meals with or greeted in passing was capable of such horrific acts must have shattered their sense of safety. It's hard to imagine carrying on as normal after discovering you were living alongside a murderer. My heart goes out to the families forever affected by this tragedy, and it makes me appreciate more the importance of community vigilance and support.
