Gerald Atkins, 67, of Kansas City, Kansas, was found fatally shot inside a home on Katie Emma Drive in Powder Springs, Georgia, in the early hours of February 15, 2025. Police arrived at about 3:33 a.m. and discovered Atkins suffering from multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cobb County Police Major Crimes Unit opened a homicide investigation that led to the identification of 64-year-old Bryon Canady of Powder Springs. Canady was arrested less than 10 hours after the shooting and has been charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. An arrest warrant alleges Canady intentionally shot Atkins several times. Property records show Canady’s name was listed as a grantee for the house in a sale dated April 2011. Authorities have not released a motive or described the relationship between Atkins and Canady.
