Georgia Darlene Barker, 71, was shot and killed inside her home on the 3300 block of Shane Lane in Cottonwood, California, on July 3, 2026. Deputies who responded after a 5:46 p.m. report found her dead; the Shasta County Coroner’s Office identified her and notified family. Investigators determined she suffered multiple gunshot wounds and classified the death a homicide.
Authorities alleged Georgia’s brother, George Charles Barker, 68, shot her, then set fire to a neighboring inhabited residence and fled. Fire crews extinguished the blaze; deputies located George a short time later on Cypress Drive in Cottonwood, within Tehama County, following an alleged hit-and-run. He was detained and transported to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit.
Detectives say evidence established probable cause linking George to the shooting and the fire. He was booked on multiple charges and prosecutors later filed counts including murder, first-degree residential burglary, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, arson and possession of a firearm by a felon. George pleaded not guilty on July 8 and was ordered held without bail because of an alleged probation violation. Does anyone have information about Georgia, her life in Cottonwood, or the events that evening?
