On the late afternoon of August 23, 2019, 14-year-old Dai’Jon J. Wynn was killed by a gunshot while sitting in the front passenger seat of a Dodge Challenger at an Exxon station on Pinson Valley Parkway in Tarrant, Alabama. The shot came from inside the vehicle and was reported to have been fired accidentally by a 17-year-old friend who was in the back seat handling the weapon.
Tarrant Police described the shooting as a tragic accident between two juveniles. The 17-year-old driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities; the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office later filed a juvenile petition charging him with certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm. Family and friends held a vigil at the Tarrant Senior Center, where Dai’Jon’s mother Laness Wynn urged teenagers to put guns down. Funeral services were held at 22nd Avenue Baptist Church.
If anyone was at the Exxon that day or has information about what happened inside the vehicle, please come forward.
