Dementrius Orlando Collins, a 19-year-old Black man from Birmingham, was killed in a burst of gunfire just after 12:50 a.m. on June 5, 2023, on Roscoe Avenue in the Kingston neighborhood. Officers responding after multiple ShotSpotter alerts found Collins unresponsive in a yard with an apparent gunshot wound; Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene and the Jefferson County Coroner publicly identified him. Funeral and memorial listings confirmed his full name, age, and date of death.
Reporting said investigators believed another person had been shot in the same episode and was found wounded in a vehicle on Interstate 59 South near the Tallapoosa Street on-ramp; that victim survived with non-life-threatening injuries and may have been shot on Roscoe Avenue while someone tried to drive him to the hospital. Authorities stated at least 70 rounds were fired, describing a concentrated, violent attack, and linked Collins’ death to a recent surge of targeted shootings in the Kingston area, including the killing of Juanderius Woods about a week earlier. No arrests or publicly named suspects in Collins’ homicide have been reported.
If anyone knew Dementrius, witnessed the shootings that night, or has information that could help investigators, please come forward.
