On January 1, 2024, a verbal dispute on the front porch of a home in the 2700 block of Simpson Street in Anniston, Alabama, ended when a man unknown to the victim shot 21-year-old Kasmine L. McAfee once. McAfee, an African American mother, was on her property at about 4:30 p.m. and was taken to Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center, where she died of her injuries.

Anniston Police investigators identified and arrested 35-year-old Jarvis Donquise Swink of Anniston on January 4, 2024; he was booked into the Calhoun County Jail and charged with one count of intentional murder and held without bond.
