On the evening of Tuesday, December 6, 2022, 22-year-old Larry Maddix Jr. was found with fatal gunshot wounds at the Hodo Haven Apartments on 33rd Street East in Tuscaloosa. Police arrived around 6:10 p.m.; the shooting was recorded as the 20th homicide in Tuscaloosa County that year and prompted an immediate investigation by the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit.

In the first hours after the discovery, no suspects or arrests were publicly reported and investigators asked the public for tips. The investigation later produced an arrest: on Friday, December 9, 2022, the United States Marshals Task Force located and arrested 29-year-old Jeremy Delvonte Hardaway of Tuscaloosa in neighboring Bibb County. Hardaway was taken into custody on a murder warrant, transported to the Violent Crimes Unit and booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail; a judge set his cash bond at $1 million.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and continue to seek anyone with information about the shooting. If anyone knew Larry Maddix Jr. or has details about what happened that night, please come forward.
