Nathaniel E. Gibson, a 37-year-old Black man from Opelika, Alabama, was shot on the evening of March 30, 2018. Officers were called to Chester Avenue about 8:30 PM and found Gibson with a severe gunshot wound; he was taken to a local hospital and died the next morning, March 31, 2018. The Opelika Police Department opened a homicide investigation immediately.

In April 2018 investigators identified a suspect and warned the public that the person was to be considered armed and dangerous, initiating a manhunt that lasted about ten months. The search ended in January 2019 when the suspect was taken into custody and later charged with Gibson’s murder. Gibson is survived by his mother, a son, siblings, a significant other, and a close friend; funeral services were held in early April 2018.
