John Marcus Fryer Sr was 29 when he was killed in the predawn hours of February 18, 2017, at the Coachman’s Manor Apartments near New Castle. At about 4:00 a.m. he and his girlfriend were returning to an apartment on Surry Court when an unidentified person ran out from the side of a building, passed the couple and fired a single shot that struck Fryer. He was found on the sidewalk with an apparent gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police searched the area, including with a K-9 team, but made no arrest. Officials did not announce a motive or say the shooter and Fryer had any prior interaction. The accounts describe only one assailant but give no name, physical or clothing description, vehicle information or clear direction of travel beyond fleeing to the other side of the building. No suspect has been publicly identified.

Fryer left behind two sons and other family members and worked as a stock person at the Goodwill Outlet in New Castle. Does anyone who was in the Coachman’s Manor Apartments area that morning remember seeing someone run past the buildings or anything that could help identify the shooter?
