Nicholas Leonard, 28, was last seen on the morning of September 1, 1990, when he was given a ride to Elephant Head Road in Wabush, Newfoundland & Labrador to spend the Labour Day weekend at his father-in-law’s cabin on Lower Loon Lake. Leonard was described as 5 feet 7 inches and 141 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was going through a divorce and grieving his sister’s recent death.
That afternoon acquaintances saw him rowing a homemade kayak on the lake and later on shore with two men; those who saw him said his eyes looked distant and glassy and that he made an unexplained claim about needing to return home because a babysitter was waiting. Back at the cabin searchers found damaged lanterns, a drawer of knives on the floor, ropes to the kayak cut rather than untied, and a butcher knife stuck in the ground near where the ropes were severed. An overturned kayak and his backpack were recovered, but no sign of Leonard. The lake was dragged and searches continued in later years, yet his remains have never been found.
The circumstances have led to competing theories, including suicide or voluntary disappearance, but the case remains unsolved and some family members hold out hope he may still be alive. Did anyone in the Wabush or Lower Loon Lake area know Nicholas or see him that weekend?
