He reportedly spent some time with two men on the shore, where his behavior was described as strange, with his eyes appearing distant and glassy. Despite having only arrived a few hours earlier for a weekend stay, he told the men he needed to go home because a babysitter was waiting, a statement that was untrue as his children were with their mother. Back at the cabin, the scene was one of disarray. Two lanterns were damaged, a drawer of knives was on the floor, and the ropes to his kayak had been cut rather than untied. A butcher knife was found stuck in the ground near where the ropes were severed. An extensive air, land, and water search was launched. Searchers located his overturned kayak and his backpack, but there was no sign of Leonard himself. Despite the lake being dragged and subsequent searches in the years that followed, his remains have never been found. This has made it difficult for his family to accept that he could have drowned, especially since he was known to be a strong swimmer and a skilled woodsman, intimately familiar with the area.
