Shelley Marie Mathieu-Read was 45 when she vanished from her Sarnia, Ontario, home in the spring of 2007. She was last definitively seen on May 20, 2007; a neighbor recalled seeing her on May 10. Shelley had moved to Sarnia with her common-law husband, Thomas Moffit, trying to leave behind a history of substance abuse. Her daughter, who described her as not someone who lived on the street, reported her missing on July 29, 2007, after weeks without contact.
The Sarnia Police Service’s investigation shifted to a homicide probe. Police alleged Moffit killed Shelley and used his sister’s black Ford F250 to dispose of the body somewhere in the rural area between Watford and Wyoming, prompting large searches of southeast Lambton County. At trial Moffit’s sister, Kathy Long, testified that he confessed, saying Shelley ain’t coming back and admitting he broke her neck in their apartment hallway. A jury convicted Thomas Moffit of second-degree murder and he was sentenced to life in prison. Shelley’s body has never been found, leaving her family without a burial site.
If anyone knew Shelley’s movements in May 2007 or saw the described vehicle in rural Lambton County, can you share what you remember?
