Kimberley Anne McLean was nine years old when she vanished from Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba. On June 18, 1966, she and her mother attended a staff picnic at Camp Alloway on Big Whiteshell Lake. Kimberley changed into her bathing suit and was allowed to go down to the dock area but told not to enter the water until her mother could supervise. Five minutes later, her mother returned with cookies and found Kimberley gone.
An immediate search by those at the picnic turned up nothing. That led to an extensive eleven-day search across a sixteen-square-mile area involving more than 100 people: the RCMP, the Armed Forces, Department of Natural Resources personnel, inmates from a nearby rehabilitation camp, and civilian volunteers. Police dogs, aircraft, boats, dragging equipment and divers were all used, but no clue to Kimberley’s whereabouts was ever found.
Decades later the case remains unsolved and the family continues to lack answers about what happened that warm June day. Did anyone at Camp Alloway that day see something that could be re-examined now?
