Fifteen-year-old Betsy Rosa Owens disappeared from Pauingassi First Nation, Manitoba, after leaving her boyfriend’s home on the morning of October 23, 1988. She had attended a volleyball game and a community dance the night before, left the dance with her boyfriend around 11:00 p.m., and was last seen the next morning. At the time she was described as 5 feet 3 inches, 119 pounds, with long black hair and brown eyes, wearing a white cotton hooded sweater, a blue denim jacket, blue jeans, and white high-top sneakers.
Local residents searched immediately and RCMP conducted searches in 1996 and 1997 but found no evidence of her whereabouts. Investigators later concluded foul play was involved; police now say they believe Betsy was taken from the dance against her will and murdered, although her body has never been found. Rumors persist in the community and police continue to review the case, with regular visits to Pauingassi by Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services seeking new information.
If anyone knew Betsy, knew where she spent time that weekend, or has information that could help bring answers, please contact the investigators handling the case.
