They left the dance together around 11:00 p.m. and went to his home. The following morning, October 23, 1988, Betsy left her boyfriend's house, and that was the last time she was ever seen. At the time of her disappearance, she was described as having a slender build, standing at 5'3" and weighing 119 pounds, with long black hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a white cotton hooded sweater, a blue denim jacket, blue jeans, and white high-top sneakers. The initial days following Betsy's disappearance were filled with frantic searching by local community members, who combed the surrounding areas in a desperate attempt to find any sign of the missing teen. Their efforts, however, proved fruitless. Law enforcement conducted their own searches in 1996 and 1997, but they too were unable to uncover any evidence that would lead to her whereabouts. As the years turned into decades, the case grew cold, but for Betsy's family and the community of Pauingassi, the pain of her absence and the mystery of her disappearance lingered. Rumors have circulated throughout the community over the years, with many residents believing they know who is responsible for her vanishing. The lead investigator on the case has stated a belief that foul play was involved, but a lack of sufficient evidence has prevented any arrests from being made. Despite the passage of nearly four decades, the investigation into Betsy Rosa Owens' disappearance remains active. Investigators with the Manitoba RCMP's Major Crime Services continue to review the case and pursue any new information that comes to light. In recent years, they have made regular trips to Pauingassi First Nation to advance the investigation, believing that individuals within the community hold the key to solving the case. In a renewed appeal for information in June of 2026, police stated that they believe Betsy was taken from the dance against her will and murdered, though her body has never been located. Her sister, Sally, the last surviving member of her immediate family, has made an emotional plea for anyone with information to come forward, expressing her deep desire to bring her sister home for a proper rest.
