Deqian Rang, also known as Maria, was 28 when she was last seen in Elora, Ontario, on April 20, 1992. She and her husband ran the Abacus Restaurant just south of the village. Friends say the couple had a tumultuous marriage and had begun a legal separation in January 1992, but a letter Deqian sent to family in China in April said she intended to stay and try to make the marriage work while helping with the restaurant.
Friends reported her missing months after she vanished, after searching Chinese communities across Canada and the United States. Police say they have been unable to locate her, suspect foul play, and note her passport and landed immigrant card were never found. The husband was arrested in July 1993 after a witness reported seeing him with a large suitcase in nearby woods; at a December 1994 trial for second-degree murder the jury acquitted him. Detectives have traveled to China, British Columbia, and the United States to follow leads, but Deqian’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Does anyone have information about Deqian’s time in Elora or contacts she may have had in 1992?
