On the night of Saturday, March 23, 2024, 18-year-old Jermaine Godbolt, a senior at Newberry High School, was shot in the area of 100 NW 253rd Street in Newberry, Florida. Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies found an adult male with gunshot wounds about 10 p.m.; he received medical aid from deputies and was transported by Alachua County Fire Rescue to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. ACSO confirmed his identity on Monday, March 25.

The shooting was reported to be a drive-by incident. Newberry High School called the death a tragedy and made counselors available for students. No suspects or arrests have been announced; the community is asked to contact ACSO or Alachua County Crime Stoppers with information.
