A routine visit to a Macon fast-food parking lot ended in murder for a visitor from Dublin. Robert Clayton Wells, 60, was shot and killed just after noon on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, while seated in his truck in the Mrs. Winners parking lot on Pio Nono Avenue. Emergency crews found him with a gunshot wound; he was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Witnesses described the shooter as a male dressed in all black who ran into the wooded area behind the restaurant after the shooting. By that night a joint task force including the FBI, U.S. Marshals, and the Bibb County Special Investigations Unit arrested 21-year-old Alonzo Bernard Hicks at an extended-stay hotel on Eisenhower Parkway. An arrest warrant alleges Hicks approached Wells with a 9mm handgun pointed at him; Hicks was charged with murder and aggravated assault and ordered held without bond.
