Just before 1 a.m. on July 2, 2023, Alton police and the Cross-River Crimes Task Force responded to a 911 call from the 2400 block of Lincoln Avenue. Officers found 33-year-old Nathan A. Brown of Alton shot; he was later pronounced dead. Investigators quickly identified and located 20-year-old Neko J. Walker of Alton, whom police say discharged the firearm that caused Brown’s death. Authorities described the incident as not random and involving people who knew one another; police also noted Brown and Walker were related.
Two days later prosecutors filed a single count of Aggravated Unlawful Use of Weapons against Walker and bail was set at $83,000 by a Madison County judge. The State’s Attorney’s Office declined to issue further charges at that time, saying the evidence did not show other violations of Illinois criminal law. An obituary published later in July named the victim Nathan Allen Brown, born June 14, 1990, and stated he died at his home on July 2, 2023, with private services planned.
Did anyone in the Alton area see or hear anything that night on Lincoln Avenue that could add detail to what happened?
