On the morning of July 21, 2023, 33-year-old Alvaro J. Andrade was found with gunshot wounds while seated in the driver’s seat of his Jeep Grand Cherokee, parked in the driveway at 188 Winthrop Street in Taunton, Massachusetts. Emergency services responded to reports of shots fired around 7:40 a.m.; Andrade was taken to Morton Hospital and pronounced deceased shortly after 9:00 a.m.

Investigators quickly developed a suspect. Later the same day, 36-year-old Dustin Humanes of East Taunton was arrested in Fall River after he was located at St. Anne’s Hospital under an assumed name. Humanes was charged with murder, carrying an illegal firearm, and carrying a loaded illegal firearm. A witness told investigators Humanes accused Andrade of involvement in a prior shooting in which Humanes had been shot, and then shot Andrade multiple times inside the Jeep. Humanes told police he acted in self-defense, saying he saw a gun in Andrade’s waistband and feared for his safety.
