Nyah Strong Hairston, 20, was found unresponsive inside her gray Nissan Versa in a ditch off the southbound lanes of I-495 near Landover Road in Hyattsville, Maryland, on the night of May 3, 2024. She had been driving home from her job at UPS. First responders broke a window to reach her and began life-saving measures; a single gunshot wound was discovered during that aid. Nyah was taken to the University of Maryland Capital Regional Trauma Center and later pronounced deceased, and the investigation shifted from a traffic crash to a homicide.
Months of work by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, with assistance from the FBI, produced a break when analysts examined cell phone data from the area that night. In November 2025 authorities charged 28-year-old Dominec Proctor of Glenn Dale, Maryland, with first-degree murder; investigators say they believe the shooting stemmed from a road rage incident. The family had been publicly seeking answers in the months after Nyah’s death.
If anyone saw Nyah on I-495 that night or has information about a road rage confrontation near Landover Road, please come forward.
