Roger Dale Higgins, 26, and Shirley Elizabeth Whitten, 19, were found stabbed to death on February 22, 1972, in Oak Grove Cemetery in Wildwood, Florida. Both victims had been stabbed multiple times; Whitten’s car was located near the bodies. Investigators reported that Whitten worked at a nearby truck stop and Higgins was a lumper for a trucking company, and that neither appeared to have enemies, leaving motive unclear.
The scene and timing have long puzzled investigators, who considered whether the killer was known to the pair or targeted them because of their ties to the truck stop. Despite years of leads and profiling, the case remains unsolved and has had a lasting impact on the small community.
Anyone who knew Higgins or Whitten, or who has information about their movements around February 22, 1972, is asked to come forward.
