On the evening of July 28, 2023, at about 9:30 p.m., a vehicle traveling westbound on State Route 24 east of the St. Stephens Drive exit near Orinda was approached by another car that moved behind and then alongside it. Occupants of the victim’s vehicle reported hearing several gunshots; the rear passenger, 22-year-old Brandon Valencia of Oakley, was struck. He was taken to a local hospital and died of his injuries on July 30, 2023.

The California Highway Patrol opened an investigation and says the suspect vehicle intentionally positioned itself behind and then alongside the victim vehicle before firing multiple rounds. Detectives have not identified a motive, the suspect or suspects, or the vehicle involved. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the CHP Investigations Tipline at (707) 917-4491.

Does anyone who travels that stretch of SR 24 or was in the area that night have dashcam or other footage that could help investigators?
