Kendrick L. Wilder Sr., 31, was fatally shot on November 13, 2023, while working at Prairie View A&M University’s Governor Bill and Vara Daniel Farm and Ranch. An alumnus of the university, Wilder was a husband, father of four children aged 3 to 11, and a coach with the Waller Pee Wee Bulldogs. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 10 a.m. after being shot multiple times at about 9 a.m.
The assailant was identified as 31-year-old former university employee Devon Elliott Rhodes. Rhodes approached Wilder, shot him multiple times, and was detained by university police as he tried to leave campus. Investigators reported a prior conflict: the two had a physical altercation at work roughly three months earlier that led to Rhodes’s termination, and Wilder had told human resources he feared for his safety. At the time of the shooting Rhodes was out on a $100 bond on an unrelated Harris County charge.
The Prairie View A&M community has organized fundraisers and memorials in Wilder’s memory while university leadership emphasized a commitment to enhancing campus safety. If anyone knew Kendrick Wilder or has information about the shooting, please come forward.
