Jonathan Gean, 39, was killed in Chicago on May 30, 2016. His death occurred during 2016’s sharp rise in violence across the city, a year that saw over 760 recorded murders and a homicide rate among the highest in the United States.
The South and West Sides were especially affected that year, with many incidents tied to small, localized gang conflicts and disputes that turned lethal. Broader social problems—poverty, unemployment and long-term disinvestment in certain neighborhoods—are cited as contributing factors, alongside shifts in policing practices such as a reduced use of stop-and-frisk following an agreement with the ACLU.
Jonathan’s killing is presented as one of many individual losses that year amid debates over public safety strategies and community trust in law enforcement. If anyone knew Jonathan, his neighborhood, or has information about the case, please share what is known.
