Ronald Fred Wood was 39 when he was killed on November 18, 2002, while on duty with the West Jordan Police Department. The officer, a White male who had served eight years with the department, spotted a 17-year-old suspect wanted in connection with local robberies in a park at 2350 West 7500 South. A foot pursuit ended when the juvenile fired a single shot that struck Officer Wood in the head. He was airlifted to University Hospital but died about three hours later.
After the shooting the teenager attempted to carjack two vehicles before being located by other officers in a nearby park. A detective fired at him, and the youth then died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The city later dedicated a five-field baseball complex as The Ron Wood Baseball Park in August of the following year. Officer Wood was remembered by his family and community for his dedication to duty and his love for his family.
