Retired Colorado Springs firefighter Daryl B. Ritz, 58, was found murdered on May 16, 2016, on his late father’s 5-acre commercial lot off Judge Orr Road in rural Peyton, Colorado. Ritz had gone to the vacant property to check on it after a string of recent burglaries and thefts there, including the theft of a kit-built airplane and a Jeep. He was reported missing when his truck was later found abandoned on the lot; his body was located the next morning.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says Ritz was shot multiple times. A GoPro mounted inside his dump truck recorded the fatal confrontation: video shows a physical altercation, Ritz throwing a man to the ground, the man getting up, and Ritz being shot four times as he ran. The footage also captured the shooter dragging debris over Ritz’s body. Investigators believe the motive was linked to the property and that the suspect had been on the lot without permission, possibly to burglarize it.
Authorities arrested Gustavo Torres-Gonzales in connection with the murder and located the stolen airplane at a Black Forest property.
If anyone has information about that property, the people seen in the area on May 16, 2016, or the events leading to Ritz’s death, please come forward.
