On June 6, 2015, 26-year-old Mindy Hughes was shot and killed in a Lakewood, Washington apartment during a heated argument with her boyfriend, Carlos Eduardo Perez Calderon, then 29. The argument reportedly began over a food bank visit, and Hughes sent her two children, ages 8 and 4, out of the room before a single gunshot was fired. Responding officers found someone performing CPR on Hughes and Calderon distraught nearby, but Hughes died of a gunshot wound to the chest shortly after.
Calderon initially told police the weapon, placed on a table, discharged accidentally when Hughes overturned the furniture. Prosecutors presented evidence the bullet trajectory, where the gun was found, and the lack of Hughes’ blood near the overturned table contradicted that account and suggested the shooting was intentional. A Pierce County jury convicted Calderon of second-degree murder and he was later sentenced.
Did anyone in Lakewood know Mindy or have information about the apartment where this happened?
