Trooper Guy David Nalley, 29, was killed during a traffic stop on the evening of October 27, 1984, northwest of Sayre on State Highway 6. A routine stop of a tractor-trailer revealed the truck and trailer had been stolen; Nalley called for backup and was shot twice in the head before assistance arrived. He had served with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol for two years and is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.
The assailant, William E. Best, was arrested and charged with murder. Best was later committed to Eastern State Hospital for evaluation. While at the hospital a female accomplice smuggled a handgun to him; Best took hostages and was shot and killed during the ensuing confrontation.
Does anyone have memories of Trooper Nalley or information about the case that could add to the record?
