On September 14, 2015, Ethan Schmidt, a 39-year-old history professor at Delta State University, was found shot to death in his office in Jobe Hall. Schmidt taught Native American and colonial history and was described as a dedicated family man and a gentleman. The campus went into lockdown after the discovery as law enforcement responded.
Investigators quickly linked the killing to Shannon Lamb, a 45-year-old geography instructor at the same university. Authorities say Lamb had earlier fatally shot his girlfriend, 41-year-old Amy Prentiss, at their home in Gautier, Mississippi, then drove to the Delta State campus and killed Schmidt. A manhunt ended when Lamb, cornered by police, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after saying he would not be taken to jail. The motive remains unclear, though reports note Schmidt had acknowledged Lamb in one of his books.
Did anyone on campus know of a dispute or tension between Schmidt and Lamb, or have other information about either victim?
