Kimberly Gay Rowell was 18 when her body was found outside Columbia Primary School in Columbia, Mississippi, on August 26, 1993. An autopsy showed she had sustained eight gunshot wounds from a 9mm handgun.

An early arrest was made in 1996 when James K. Polk Jr. was taken into custody, but those charges were later withdrawn and he was released. Nearly two decades after the killing, Polk was indicted on a capital murder charge in March 2012. His cousin, Howard Earl Polk Jr., was also implicated but died before trial. At trial, three witnesses testified that they had heard Howard Earl Polk Jr. make statements about killing Rowell.

James K. Polk Jr. was ultimately convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison for Kimberly Rowell’s death. Did anyone in Columbia at the time notice anything unusual the night she was killed or know more about her last movements?
