David Jason Jefferies, 19, was among the crew aboard the 162-foot trawler Aleutian Enterprise when it capsized and sank off Dutch Harbor, Alaska, on March 22, 1990. The vessel was hauling a very large net when the net snapped, dumping the catch across the deck and causing a sudden port list. Openings on the processing deck became submerged and water flooded the ship. Within about 15 minutes the Aleutian Enterprise had capsized and gone under.
Twenty-two crew members escaped and were later rescued from life rafts, but David was one of nine men who did not survive. The Coast Guard searched for the missing crew but suspended the search when the men were presumed to have drowned in the icy Bering Sea. An NTSB investigation later identified multiple safety failures, including missing or poor-condition watertight doors and inadequate training, maintenance, and safety oversight by the operating company.
If anyone knew David Jefferies, worked on the Aleutian Enterprise, or has information about that voyage, please share what is known.
