Jim John ’Jay’ Cash Jr., 47, was found dead at his Ivanhoe Avenue residence in Waynesboro on April 10, 2020, after suffering a gunshot wound. A female was also found at the scene with serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

On August 6, 2020, authorities arrested 30-year-old Donte L. Harris of Waynesboro in Harrisonburg; he was charged with second-degree murder in Cash’s death, malicious wounding for the woman’s injuries, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Harris was held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.

Investigators have said there was a history of discord between the victim and the suspect’s family, and neighborhood tensions are being examined as a possible factor.
