Kameron Travis Stanley, 18, was fatally shot on the evening of July 22, 2016, on Stewart Drive in York County while standing outside a residence. A green Mercedes carrying three people pulled up and an occupant opened fire, striking Stanley multiple times; he was taken to a local hospital and later died. He was described by his mother as an all-around, fun-loving teenager who attended Bruton High School and worked two jobs.
The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office arrested three suspects: 18-year-old Johnathan Cotman of Toano and two 17-year-old males from James City County. All three were originally charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Prosecutors said the shooting was related to the shooter being the ex-boyfriend of a female who was with Stanley at the time.
Charges against Cotman were later dropped. A Williamsburg 17-year-old pleaded guilty in June 2017 to second-degree murder and using a firearm; his sentencing was scheduled for September 2017. The outcome for the other 17-year-old remains unclear because his juvenile records are sealed.
If anyone knew Kameron, witnessed the shooting, or has information about the remaining suspect, please come forward.
