On the evening of August 11, 2020, 27-year-old Darius Mitchell, a Black man, was fatally shot at the Pinetree Court apartment complex (also known as Garden Estates West) in Michigan City, Indiana. At about 8:45 p.m., a call to La Porte County Regional Dispatch reported multiple gunshots in the 900 block of Southwind Drive. Officers arriving on scene found a crowd of roughly 50 people near building 13 and discovered Mitchell lying motionless; an officer began life-saving measures before EMS pronounced him dead.
The Michigan City Police Department opened a homicide investigation and sought cell phone video evidence, offering a $1,000 reward for footage that could lead to an arrest. A multiagency effort involving the Michigan City Police Department, the Fugitive Apprehension Team, and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force identified a suspect who had left the area. On September 25, 2020, authorities located and arrested 19-year-old Demario Emmanuel Williams-Anderson near the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis on a La Porte County murder warrant; he was held on $1 million bond.
In July 2021, Demario Williams-Anderson pleaded guilty in La Porte Superior Court to the fatal shooting of Darius Mitchell. If anyone has information about Mitchell, the shooting, or knew him at Garden Estates West, please share what is known.
