On a cold Valentine's Day in 2018, Joseph Maurice Ward, a 37-year-old Black/African American man from Silver Spring, Maryland, met a violent end in Capitol Heights. His body was discovered in the afternoon, lying outside a vacant house in the 1300 block of Oates Street. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 4:00 p.m.
