Tashman Williams, a 31-year-old resident of Compton, was tragically killed on July 24, 2022, during a mass shooting at Peck Park in San Pedro, California. The incident occurred around 3:50 p.m. during a car show and a weekly softball game, which had drawn a crowd of approximately 500 people. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office confirmed that Williams died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Another victim, Carlyle Phillips, 29, of Cypress, also lost his life in the shooting, and six others were injured. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported that the shooting stemmed from an altercation between individuals who had decided to settle their dispute at the park. Despite the large number of attendees, the shooting was not believed to be gang-related.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the LAPD launched an extensive investigation. Initially, no arrests were made, and the police urged anyone with information to come forward. The park was treated as a crime scene, and a citywide tactical alert was issued. Community members expressed their concerns during a town hall meeting, calling for increased police presence and support to address violence and issues related to the unhoused community in the park.
On September 12, 2022, the LAPD announced the arrest of four suspects in connection with the shooting. Raynard French, 56, was arrested in Carson; Travion McCraw, 31, in Lake Elsinore; Antoine Newsome, 41, in Gardena; and Kenyon Siler, 48, in Long Beach. All four suspects were booked on suspicion of murder and were held without bail. The arrests were made by personnel from multiple LAPD divisions and an FBI SWAT team. The case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office for filing consideration.
However, the legal proceedings faced complications. Three of the four suspects were released as the District Attorney's office decided not to file charges against them at that time. The investigation into the shooting continued, with authorities still seeking additional information and evidence to build a stronger case. The community remained vigilant, hoping for justice for the victims and a resolution to the tragic event that had shaken their sense of safety.
