Zobeyda Zoe Esquerra, a 22-year-old woman from Turlock, CA, tragically lost her life on March 8, 2022, in a fatal shooting incident. The events leading to her death began when the Turlock Police Department received reports of a shooting near Geer Road and Wayside Drive. Upon arrival, officers found Esquerra suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite receiving immediate medical attention and being transported to a local hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation
quickly identified the suspect as Juan Francisco Ibarra-Tapia, also 22 years old and a resident of Livingston. Ibarra-Tapia had a history with Esquerra, having been arrested in October 2021 for stalking her. This prior arrest stemmed from incidents where Ibarra-Tapia had been persistently following and harassing Esquerra, causing her significant distress and panic attacks. Despite the issuance of an emergency protective order, Ibarra-Tapia resumed his stalking behavior once the order expired.
On the night of the shooting, Ibarra-Tapia was seen fleeing the scene in a light-colored sedan, which he later crashed into a fence while attempting to evade the police. He was apprehended after a brief foot chase and was found in possession of the firearm used in the shooting. The police investigation revealed that Ibarra-Tapia had also fired shots at two employees inside an O'Reilly Auto Parts store on Geer Road earlier that evening, although no one was injured in that incident.
Ibarra-Tapia was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including homicide, two counts of attempted homicide, and evading arrest. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Jail without bail. The Turlock Police Department expressed their condolences to Esquerra's family and emphasized their commitment to ensuring justice is served. The case highlighted the severe consequences of stalking and the importance of protective measures for victims of such harassment.
