On August 27, 1992, the body of Cynthia Lyn Rose, a 32-year-old white woman, was discovered behind the Blueberry Hill Café in Turlock, California. Initially, her death was misclassified as a drug overdose. However, serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, known as the "Happy Face Killer," later confessed to her murder. Jesperson claimed that Cynthia, whom he described as a sex worker, entered his truck without permission while he was sleeping at a truck stop.
Feeling violated, he strangled her to death.
Jesperson's confession came as part of a series of letters he sent to media outlets and law enforcement, in which he detailed his crimes and signed with a smiley face, earning him his nickname. His admissions led to the reopening of several cases, including Cynthia's, and corrected earlier misclassifications of causes of death.
Keith Hunter Jesperson was arrested on March 30, 1995, after the murder of his girlfriend, Julie Ann Winningham. Following his arrest, he confessed to killing eight women across multiple states between 1990 and 1995. He is currently serving multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole at the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem.
