On the evening of her death, Karina and her boyfriend, Jesus Arias Villa, were sitting in their car near Closter Park in Salinas when they were approached by two individuals who opened fire on them.
The assailants, later identified as cousins Gonzalo and Jose Echeverria, fired multiple shots into the vehicle, resulting in the deaths of both Karina and Jesus. The motive behind the shooting was later revealed to be a case of mistaken identity, as neither Karina nor Jesus had any gang affiliations.
The investigation into the murders led to the arrest of Gonzalo and Jose Echeverria, both known gang members. The cousins were charged with two counts of first-degree murder, with special circumstances of lying in wait and committing multiple murders. They were also convicted of personal discharge of a firearm causing death, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
