Michael David Ramos, aged 33, tragically lost his life on August 31, 2021, in Salinas, California. On that fateful day, Ramos and Amanda Nicole Ferrell, aged 30, were standing outside a residence on East Bernal Drive near Maryal Drive when they were approached by a silver sedan. The occupants of the vehicle asked Ramos where he was from before two of them opened fire, striking both Ramos and Ferrell multiple times.
Despite immediate efforts by first responders, Ramos succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Ferrell was transported to a local hospital where she later died.
The Salinas Police Department launched an intensive investigation into the double homicide. Initial efforts included collecting video surveillance and interviewing witnesses to track the suspect vehicle. The breakthrough came when detectives identified the driver of the vehicle as David Delgado Jimenez, who was arrested on September 2, 2021. Further investigation led to the identification and arrest of the remaining suspects: Yohani Nevarez Mendez, a juvenile male, and Mario Alexander Rodriguez. Mendez was already in custody on unrelated charges and was charged with two counts of murder on January 6, 2022. The juvenile male was lodged at the Monterey County Juvenile Hall for two counts of murder on May 2, 2022. Rodriguez, the final suspect, was charged with two counts of murder by the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office on July 13, 2022.
The case took a significant turn when it was revealed that the suspects were members of the Norteños street gang. They had been driving through what they believed to be rival Sureno gang territory, looking for an enemy to target. Unfortunately, Ramos and Ferrell, who had no gang affiliations, became the unintended victims of this violent encounter. The suspects were eventually convicted, with Rodriguez receiving a sentence of 50 years to life in state prison. This case highlighted the ongoing gang violence in Salinas and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to bring justice to the victims and their families.
