On the night of May 10, 2021, at approximately 10:33 PM, Santa Ana Police officers responded to a distress call reporting a shooting incident in the 1900 block of South Fairview Street, Santa Ana, CA. Upon arrival, officers discovered Froylan Vazquez, a 24-year-old resident of Santa Ana, unresponsive with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Despite the efforts of the Orange County Fire Authority, Vazquez was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Orange County Coroner’s Division later confirmed his identity and cause of death.
The initial investigation revealed that a black truck was seen fleeing the scene through an alley immediately after the shooting. Utilizing surveillance footage from various locations and other investigative resources, Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD) detectives were able to track down the suspect vehicle. On May 12, 2021, the truck was located parked in front of a residence on South Baker Street. The following day, at approximately 12:40 AM, SAPD, with the assistance of the Santa Ana Gang Unit, Major Enforcement Team, and Career Criminal Unit, arrested 19-year-old Jose Antonio Mejia-Garcia at his home. During the execution of a search warrant, a 9mm handgun was recovered from the suspect’s residence.
Mejia-Garcia was interviewed by homicide detectives and made incriminating statements regarding the shooting. With the concurrence of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Mejia-Garcia was booked on charges of murder under California Penal Code 187. The motive for the murder was identified as a dispute over a female. The case against Mejia-Garcia proceeded with the SAPD Homicide Section leading the investigation, and the community was urged to provide any additional information that could aid in the case.
The tragic death of Froylan Vazquez and the subsequent arrest of Jose Antonio Mejia-Garcia highlight the ongoing issues of violence and crime within the community. The SAPD's swift action and use of surveillance technology played a crucial role in apprehending the suspect and bringing some measure of justice to the victim's family. The case remains a somber reminder of the impact of violent crime and the importance of community cooperation in solving such cases.
