The incident occurred while he was on the porch of a home, and a dog accompanying him was also killed in the shooting.

The investigation into Jones's death led to significant developments. Tanaj Johnson, a 22-year-old from Pasadena, was identified as one of the primary suspects. The suspects were believed to be affiliated with a Pasadena gang, and investigators suggested that the shooting might have been gang-related, although Jones himself was not a gang member.
