These shootings were part of a violent feud between the Duroc Crips, a black gang, and two Latino gangs, Monrovia Nuevo Varrio and Eastside Duarte.
The violence that claimed Lee's life was not an isolated incident. It was part of a broader pattern of gang-related violence that had escalated in the area. Just three days before Lee's death, 16-year-old Sammantha Salas was also killed in a gang-related shooting. Both Lee and Salas were innocent victims caught in the crossfire of a gang war that had been intensifying over the years. The community was left in fear and mourning, with families and local authorities calling for an end to the senseless violence.
In the aftermath of Lee's death, law enforcement agencies intensified their efforts to address the gang violence. Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide Bureau investigated the case, and suspects were arrested the following year. However, the legal proceedings did not bring the closure that Lee's family had hoped for. A jury later acquitted a Monrovia gang member who had been charged with Lee's murder. Between 2000 and 2010, there were 1,063 homicides in the San Gabriel Valley and Whittier, with 36 percent of those cases remaining unsolved.
