The incident occurred near Raymond Avenue and 144th Street, where Campbell was shot multiple times. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records, Campbell was seated in a parked car with his brother in front of their home when they were confronted by three armed men on foot.
The confrontation quickly escalated into violence when one of the assailants, George "Lil Vampy" Hernandez, swung at Campbell, prompting Campbell to retaliate. This led to all three attackers drawing their firearms and opening fire. Campbell's father, who was inside the house, received a text from his other son about the escalating situation and rushed outside with his own gun, only to find himself in the midst of a deadly shootout. Despite the father's efforts to defend his sons, Campbell succumbed to his injuries after being shot ten times.
The investigation into Campbell's death revealed that the assailants were members of a local street gang known as Gardena-13. The gang members involved in the shooting were identified as Justin "Hitta" Arteaga, Antonio "Tank" Yanez, and George Hernandez. Arteaga was arrested on November 17, 2020, at Los Angeles International Airport while attempting to flee to Mexico. He was later found guilty of violent crime in aid of racketeering murder and sentenced to life in federal prison. Yanez and Jesus "Rowdy" Hernandez, another participant in the shootout, were apprehended shortly after the incident. Jesus Hernandez pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and received a 110-month prison sentence.
The trial of Justin Arteaga shed light on the motives behind the attack. Prosecutors argued that Arteaga, a recruit of Gardena-13, was eager to prove his worth to the gang by participating in the murder. The jury heard testimony about the gang's operations and its control over the territory where the Campbell family lived.
